Florida real-estate sales climb

Florida home sales soared to new heights in March with a total of 21,610 homes sold statewide for a 29 percent increase over March 2003's sales of 16,725 homes, according to the Florida Association of Realtors.

The statewide median price rose 12 percent to $168,400; a year ago, it was $150,400. In March 1999, the statewide median sales price was $101,100, resulting in a 66.5 percent increase over the five-year-period, FAR records show.  more...

Major divide in home ownership between whites, minorities

Economic conditions lift consumer mood

The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index, a key indicator of economic conditions, increased in April to 92.9 (1985=100), from 88.5 in March. The Present Situation Index rose to 90.6 from 84.4, and the Expectations Index increased to 94.5 from 91.3.

"This latest improvement in consumer confidence was sparked by a more favorable assessment of current business and labor market conditions and increased consumer optimism about the next six months," Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board's Consumer Research Center, said.  more...

Refinancings drop as rates push past 6%

Overall mortgage applications increased by 0.5 percent last week on a seasonally adjusted basis, with the number of refinancing applications dropping and the number of purchase applications increasing, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association's weekly survey.

The MBA seasonally adjusted purchase index increased by 6.8 percent to 463.5 from 434.1 the previous week.  more...

Illinois real estate breaks records

The Illinois housing market's spring season came in like a lion in March as existing single-family home sales were up 11.5 percent, while the statewide median home-sale price increased 3.5 percent compared to the same period one year ago, the Illinois Association of Realtors reported Tuesday.

Statewide sales of existing homes in March totaled 9,577, an 11.5 percent increase from the 8,589 sales posted during March 2003. The March 2004 results are the highest March sales reported on record since the association began reporting statistics in 1990.  more...

Vegetables, lead paint don't mix

Q: I have some space behind my garage where I could raise some vegetables, but I was advised not to do this because the garage has crumbling lead paint on it.

My yardman, who is a shipyard painter in his regular job, has told me that he can remove the paint. Would it be unethical to let him do this?

I would like to ask him some pertinent questions about his methods, but his English is limited, and I don't think he would understand me.  more...
