The American Land Title Association released figures today that reveal a strong financial picture for the title insurance industry from the first quarter of 2004. However, the figures are a bit misleading. "Total revenue for the first quarter of 2004 looks high because it actually includes income that had not been reported from the previous quarter," according to ALTA director of research, Rich McCarthy. "The usual lag between closing and reporting of revenue was exacerbated by the rush of refinancings during the last half of 2003," he said. more...

About 5,000 people across the nation are now living in cohousing, a type of neighborhood that is planned by its residents, and about one-third of the residents in these developments are households with children, according to the Cohousing Association of the United States. Cohousing, which originated in Denmark, was introduced to the United States about 15 years ago, and there are now an estimated 75 cohousing developments in the U.S. Denmark has about 350 completed cohousing communities. more...

The 30-year fixed-rate average dropped to 5.91 percent, and the 15-year fixed-rate fell to 5.31 percent. The 1-year adjustable was lower at 3.51 percent. DEAR BOB: Many years ago, my mother and her sister bought a rural property together as an investment. It turned out to be a very profitable farm property, which was rented to an adjoining farmer for a share of his annual crop profits. As a result, my mother and her sister received superb annual payments. However, my mother died in July 2003. Since then, her sister claims all the crop profits received from the tenant-farmer go to her. My mother left no will.
