Elisabeth DeMarse out at Bankrate

Bankrate today appointed Thomas Evans as president and CEO. He currently is a director of the company and will retain his board seat in his new position.

Evans succeeds Elisabeth DeMarse, who has left the company.

Evans has more than 25 years experience running publishing and Internet media-related businesses. He was previously chairman and CEO of Official Payments Corp., president and CEO of GeoCities and the president and publisher of U.S. News & World Report, The Atlantic Monthly and Fast Company magazines.  more...

Bascom lands Seattle-area apartments

Bascom Northwest Ventures acquired the 750-unit Waterstone Place Apartments, located in the Seattle suburb of Federal Way, Wash.

The value of the transaction was more than $49 million.

Family trust bags SoCal retail center

Grubb & Ellis represented a private family trust in the purchase of La Verne Courtyard, an 85,036-square-foot retail center in La Verne, Calif.

The transaction was valued at $16 million.

La Verne Courtyard is located at the southwest corner of Foothill Boulevard and White Avenue, less than one mile south of the new 210 Freeway. Orchard Supply Hardware and Office Depot anchor the center, which was 100 percent leased at the time of sale.

Steadfast Properties of Newport Beach sold the asset. The buyer was in a 1031 exchange and assumed the existing loan.  more...

Land title industry makes gains

The American Land Title Association released figures today that reveal a strong financial picture for the title insurance industry from the first quarter of 2004. However, the figures are a bit misleading.

"Total revenue for the first quarter of 2004 looks high because it actually includes income that had not been reported from the previous quarter," according to ALTA director of research, Rich McCarthy. "The usual lag between closing and reporting of revenue was exacerbated by the rush of refinancings during the last half of 2003," he said.  more...

Cohousing a growing real estate trend

About 5,000 people across the nation are now living in cohousing, a type of neighborhood that is planned by its residents, and about one-third of the residents in these developments are households with children, according to the Cohousing Association of the United States.

Cohousing, which originated in Denmark, was introduced to the United States about 15 years ago, and there are now an estimated 75 cohousing developments in the U.S. Denmark has about 350 completed cohousing communities.  more...

Housing generates 935,000 jobs in California

The home-building industry and other housing-related industries contributes an estimated $218 billion per year to the California economy, generates 935,000 jobs and accounts for about 10 percent of all economic activity in the state, according to a 2004 report by the Sacramento Regional Research Institute.

The research institute is a joint venture of the Sacramento Area Commerce and Trade Organization and California State University, Sacramento.  more...

Mortgage rates dip

Long-term mortgage interest rates were lower Friday, and the benchmark 10-year Treasury bond yield increased to 4.71 percent.

The 30-year fixed-rate average dropped to 5.91 percent, and the 15-year fixed-rate fell to 5.31 percent. The 1-year adjustable was lower at 3.51 percent.

The 30-year Treasury bond yield increased to 5.38 percent.

DEAR BOB: Many years ago, my mother and her sister bought a rural property together as an investment. It turned out to be a very profitable farm property, which was rented to an adjoining farmer for a share of his annual crop profits. As a result, my mother and her sister received superb annual payments. However, my mother died in July 2003. Since then, her sister claims all the crop profits received from the tenant-farmer go to her. My mother left no will.
