Home prices, particularly in high-cost areas, could decline 15 percent if President Bush's tax reform panel's expected recommendation to convert the mortgage interest deduction (MID) to a tax credit gets implemented, said Al Mansell, president of the National Association of Realtors. Speaking at the opening session of the 2005 Realtors Conference & Expo in San Francisco, Mansell said that if the MID were changed, the typical homeowner could lose $20,000 to $30,000 in housing equity. more...

Foreclosure activity in California showed a year-over-year increase during the last quarter for the first time in more than three years, the result of lower appreciation rates and riskier loans, a real estate information service reported. Lending institutions sent default notices to 12,568 California homeowners during the July-to-September period, up 0.8 percent from 12,465 for the second quarter, and up 3.5 percent from 12,145 for last year's third quarter, according to DataQuick Information Systems. more...

Lead by a sharp increase in new-home construction in Riverside County, California housing starts showed a sizeable increase in September compared to the previous month and year-ago levels, the California Building Industry Association announced Thursday. A total of 20,952 building permits for new homes and apartments were issued in September statewide, up 21.3 percent from August and up 20.9 percent from September 2004, according to figures compiled by Burbank, Calif.-based Construction Industry Research Board. more...

Stewart Information Services Corp. on Thursday reported third-quarter profits increased to $31.8 million, or $1.74 per diluted share, due to continued low interest rates, which have boosted residential and commercial closings. Third-quarter revenues also increased to $639.4 million, up from $529.7 million a year ago. more...
