The decisiveness of this week's move was emphasized by an extraordinary departure from trading norm. Funny things happen in thin trading in holiday weeks (the bond market closed at midday Thursday for the Passover-Good-Friday combo); however, ever since Sept.  more...

Title problems were found in 36 percent of all residential real estate transactions in 2005, up from 25 percent in 2000, due to a booming real estate market and an increase in transactions, according to a title insurance industry survey.

"The most frequent curative action taken last year was obtaining releases and/or obtaining pay-offs for discovered liens, such as prior or existing first or second mortgages, unpaid child and spousal support, outstanding taxes, and other judgments against the property," said Rande Yeager, president of the American Land Title Association, which cond  more...

Survey: Home buyers want less paper

By Inman News, Thursday, April 13, 2006.

A small survey of more than 1,000 U.S. home buyers found that buyers expect their home values to appreciate despite concerns about softening real estate markets.

And asked which facet of the home-buying process needs most improvement, most respondents cited the large amount of paper involved and the amount -- or lack of -- communication in the transaction.

The survey, conducted by national title insurance underwriter Stewart Title Guaranty Co., questioned home buyers following closings in the last eight business days of March 2006.  more...

A brief history of 'High-Tech' architecture

By Arrol Gellner, Thursday, April 13, 2006.

It's been almost 30 years since the architectural and decorative style known as "High-Tech" hit the American scene. Arising during the mid-1970s, and legitimized by Joan Kron and Suzanne Slesin's eponymous book of 1978, High-Tech had every hipster architecture student of my generation designing facades with chain-link fencing and corrugated culverts.

Among High-Tech's most celebrated paradigms was Paris's Pompidou Center, completed by the architects Richard Rodgers and Renzo Piano in 1976.  more...
