Real estate commissions are negotiable -- if you ask Premium Content

By Inman News, Monday, August 4, 2008.

Real estate consumers who choose to negotiate commission rates charged by agents are mostly successful in lowering the amount they pay -- and customer satisfaction does not appear to be related to cost.

That's according to a survey released Monday by Consumer Reports, based on responses to an annual questionnaire of 3,753 readers who sold or tried to sell a home, 4,029 who bought one, and 7,368 who both bought and sold a home in the past few years.  more...

Should buyer forfeit deposit over fireplace defect?

By Barry Stone, Monday, August 4, 2008.

Dear Barry,
I'm having some difficulties with the seller of the home I am buying. When I first looked at the house, he said the fireplace was in working order. But my home inspector says there are loose bricks and mortar in the firebox. Now the seller says he never used the fireplace but was told when he bought the house that it worked. When I asked him to fix the loose masonry, he refused because the sale is not contingent on the findings of the home inspector. And he still insists that the fireplace is in working order, even though the home inspector disagrees. Does the seller have to pay to fix the fireplace?  more...

Last ditch attempt to preserve seller-funded gifts

By Inman News, Monday, August 4, 2008.

Legislation introduced in the House by Al Green, D-Texas, would scuttle plans to eliminate seller-funded down-payment assistance as an option for loans guaranteed by the Federal Housing Administration, but allow FHA to implement risk-based premium pricing.  more...

Los Angeles Times axes real estate section Premium Content

By Glenn Roberts Jr., Monday, August 4, 2008.

The Los Angeles Times has ceased publication of its weekly real estate section -- born more than a century ago -- amid major staff cuts.

In mid-July, newspaper managers began to carry out the "largest staff and production cuts in the newspaper's history," according to an article in the Times, citing "a continuing slide in advertising revenue." The newspaper has a circulation of more than 1 million and ranks among the largest newspapers in the nation.  more...
