Search for bottom offers peek into abyss Premium Content

The Treasury this week effortlessly raked in $64 billion by selling long-term debt, and mortgage markets stayed about the same, just under 5 percent.

The outside world may choke on our paper someday, but not when its economies are failing faster than ours. German orders for manufactured goods in January fell 38 percent from the prior year, its exports down 21 percent. China is trying domestic stimulus but lives on exports, which are dropping at a 40 percent annual pace, its trade surplus down 87 percent.  more...

Affordable building materials come at a price

By Arrol Gellner, Friday, March 13, 2009.

Some years ago I was walking through an old Victorian house that was being renovated. In one room where the original wall framing was exposed, I found a curious bit of workmanship. One of the two-by-four studs had been carefully notched about halfway up, and a small hardwood wedge had been driven in. After a moment's study, the reason became clear: The two-by-four had been badly bowed, and rather than cutting it up for some lesser purpose, the Victorian carpenter had used an age-old but effective trick to make it straight again.  more...

Rising water costs take toll on renters

By Robert Griswold, Friday, March 13, 2009.

Q: I have been renting a duplex unit for more than three years. A week ago, my landlord told me that the water bills have been getting very high and that she was thinking about charging me for water. My lease states that I am not responsible for water unless it's more than $30 per month.  more...

Scott Daniels, a broker with Florida List for Less Realty Inc. in Cooper City, Fla., recognized the need to conduct business in a more virtual way several years ago.

So about two years ago, he created a separate division of his company called Global Partners Realty Group Inc. to attract real estate agents seeking to work in a virtual-office environment.  more...
