Electrical outlets that put safety first

By Bill and Kevin Burnett, Wednesday, May 20, 2009.

Q: I was hoping you guys could tell your readers what the benefits would be in installing GFCI electrical outlets even if there is no grounding wire. There are probably many homeowners who would be willing to install GFCIs themselves but who aren't able to install a grounding wire or are unwilling to pay an electrician to install one. I purchased a package of three that came with little stickers to put on the outlet if it is not grounded.

Maybe you could suggest the best locations to install them (bathroom, by kitchen sink, by laundry tub)?  more...

If it ain't blight, don't try to fix it

By Tara-Nicholle Nelson, Wednesday, May 20, 2009.

In the case City of Long Branch v. Anzalone, the city declared an entire neighborhood to be blighted and put a redevelopment plan in place. As part of the plan, a number of homeowners were notified that their homes would be condemned to make way for new buildings, and the homes were appraised by the city's contractors.

The homeowners objected that the appraisals incorrectly described their homes and that the city's blanket declaration that the area or their homes were blighted, without providing specific facts supporting that designation, did not justify the condemnation of their homes under the New Jersey state constitution's blight and eminent domain provisions.  more...

Boomer dilemma: sell or stay?

By Tom Kelly, Wednesday, May 20, 2009.

Climate change, family change, attitude change.

For the first time anybody can remember, we've had snow in six consecutive months, including two separate weeks when we could not get out of the driveway (unheard of in the Puget Sound). My wife refuses to get behind the wheel at the sign of a snowflake, and my arthritic knees seem to lock up at the mere mention of "overnight accumulation."

Our four kids are grown and gone. If you've ever experienced a child's first birthday away from home, you've got a twinge of the emotional package headed your way.  more...

Surviving real estate tight spots Premium Content

With my local, traditional news delivery medium now relegated to the equivalent of a letter-sized memorandum of understanding, I find myself relying, like so many, on online sources for my daily dose of breaking events. The lighter "Currents" section I used to enjoy has now been replaced by Google's "How to of the day" list.

This morning, my attention was drawn to the entry titled, "How to escape from the trunk of a car." "Being trapped in a car's trunk can be a harrowing, sometimes deadly experience," the teaser read. Maybe so, but my initial reaction was that this does not apply to me.  more...

FBI gets firepower to fight mortgage fraud

By Inman News, Wednesday, May 20, 2009.

Congress has passed legislation intended to double the number of FBI mortgage fraud task forces and to close legal loopholes that have prevented federal prosecutors from filing fraud and money laundering charges against many mortgage lenders.  more...
