Mortgage applications up 6.6%

By Inman News, Wednesday, June 24, 2009.

Increased demand for both purchase and refinance loans drove a 6.6 percent increase in mortgage applications last week, the Mortgage Bankers Association said in releasing the results of its Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey.

Requests for purchase loans were up 7.3 percent from the previous week during the week ending June 19, and applications for refinancings rose 5.9 percent. Compared to a year ago, applications for mortgages are up 17.2 percent, the MBA said.  more...

Title overcharge doesn't void mortgage

By Tara-Nicholle Nelson, Wednesday, June 24, 2009.

In the case McCutcheon v. America's Servicing Co., the homeowner (M. Clark McCutcheon) signed the closing documents to effect a cash-out refinance mortgage on his home, despite the fact that his eyesight and lighting prevented him from reading the terms.

Several days after signing, the homeowner (an elderly man on a fixed income) realized that the stated income, the payments and the title insurance fee were all higher than he had believed.

After using the cash from the refinance to make several payments, the homeowner defaulted on the mortgage and issued a demand to the mortgage company to rescind the loan.  more...

Tips on taking the homebuyer tax credit

By Tom Kelly, Wednesday, June 24, 2009.

The down payment remains the deepest chuck hole on the road to home ownership. First-time buyers and folks starting over after divorce or bankruptcy, however, now have more workable, flexible loan programs than any other borrower category.

And now, as they say on television, "for a limited time only" first-time homebuyers are eligible for a huge bonus -- an $8,000 tax credit, thanks to the recent housing stimulus package. It's called a "tax credit," but if you read all the details, even if you pay less than $8,000 in taxes, you would get credited back the difference with a check from Uncle Sam next year.  more...

When stimulus is meaningless Premium Content

Dear lawmakers:

I am writing to thank you for everything you have done over the past year to suture our economic wounds and stimulate our housing market. It has been very helpful. Now, please stop.

I know that all of the rules and regulations implemented over the past year were designed with only the best intentions -- to provide opportunities for homeowners to keep their homes while restoring stability and sanity to a messed-up housing market and an economy run amok.  more...

No spring in May new-home sales

By Inman News, Wednesday, June 24, 2009.

Sales of newly-built single-family homes fell 0.6 percent from April to May as prices rebounded from recent lows, and were down 32.8 percent from a year ago, the U.S. Census Bureau said today.  more...

Easy fix for water hammer

By Bill and Kevin Burnett, Wednesday, June 24, 2009.

Once again it's time to empty the question bag. Today it's a bit of a hodgepodge. Water and electricity usually don't go together, but today is the exception.

Q: We must have air in our plumbing pipes, because every time we turn them on and then shut them off there is a big bang. After searching online for "air in pipes," I have discovered that we have a water hammer problem. The loud noise occurs only when we shut off any sink, or the dishwasher stops. Do you have simple, easy-to-follow instructions on how to get rid of the water hammer?

A: Maybe. Water hammer is hydraulic shock. It's the sudden increase in water pressure in the pipes when there is a change in the direction or velocity of the water.  more...

Design vs. content: Design wins Premium Content

By Robert Hahn, Wednesday, June 24, 2009.

On my personal blog I recently wrote about the importance of design, inspired by an excerpt from Alan Webber's book, "Rules of Thumb," posted on @Issue, an online journal.  more...
