Property insurer attempts to weasel out of paying claim

Admiral Insurance Co. issued a property insurance policy for the Cresent Hills Apartment complex. The annual premium was paid. But Admiral learned the complex had fallen into a deplorable condition.

Based on an inspection report, Admiral decided to cancel the insurance policy. On Oct. 5, 2000, an Admiral underwriting assistant prepared an undated cancellation notice for Cresent, stating the policy would be cancelled Nov. 8, 2000. The notice was to be sent by certified mail to Cresent.  more...

Planned community reinvents Mexican real estate

Members of FONATUR, Mexico's tourist development agency, had done all of the heavy lifting for the country's next major destination area, targeted just south of 300-year-old Loreto, a friendly, charming town on the Sea of Cortez and the original capital of "the Californias." Roads were in, water was on the way...but how do you limit the region to an alternative of small Mexican villages rather erecting more huge concrete condo structures?

How do I add slope to my roof?

Q: I enjoyed an article written a couple of years ago about puddling on flat roofs. I have a slope problem on a 12-by-10-foot one-story addition attached at one edge to a higher wall of my split-level house.

It is a tarpaper roof, applied by professionals over a flat wood surface. They had no idea how to add a slope after I said the roof was gathering several inches of water after heavy rainfalls.  more...
