Home sales surged in Southern California in April, as prices rose at their fastest pace in more than 16 years to a new high, according to DataQuick Information Systems. A total of 32,916 homes were sold in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Ventura, San Bernardino and Orange counties in April, up 0.8 percent from March's 32,650 and up 7.3 percent from 30,675 for April last year, DataQuick reported. Home sales in the Houston metropolitan area during April increased 22.2 percent from the same month a year ago and set an all-time high for the month, according to the Houston Association of Realtors. Total property sales, which included single-family homes, townhomes, multifamily homes, country homes, high-rise properties and lots listed on the MLS, reached 6,353, the highest number of total sales ever recorded by the association during the month of April. Overall mortgage applications dropped by nearly 12 percent last week on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association's weekly survey. The MBA seasonally adjusted purchase index decreased by 8.1 percent to 454.2 from 494.3 the previous week. The seasonally adjusted refinance index decreased by 16.8 percent to 1,816.9 from 2,184.6 one week earlier. more...

The 30-year fixed-rate average inched up to 6 percent, and the 15-year fixed-rate increased to 5.37 percent. The 1-year adjustable was down slightly at 3.48 percent.
