RE/MAX co-founder buys a big car
Dave Liniger, co-founder of RE/MAX International and avid adventurist, bought a new set of wheels this month -- a $1 million Hummer that had served a news crew in Iraq.
In 2003, the vehicle carried a CNN news team in Iraq that was embedded with a Marine Corp unit in Iraq, according to a RE/MAX announcement, and was refurbished on "Overhaulin," a show on The Learning Channel. Liniger submitted the winning bid, a $1 million donation, for the Hummer, dubbed "Warrior One. Another bidder contributed a donation of $250,000. The money will benefit Fisher House Foundation, which provides homes for families of wounded service members who are rehabilitating in military hospitals. The homes are built on the grounds of major military and Veterans Affairs medical centers.
According to an announcement at the Fisher House Web site, the Hummer and a four-man CNN news team "came under heavy fire ... when coalition forces took Baghdad."
Liniger, too, is no stranger to danger -- he is a Vietnam veteran and in 1998 he was part of a crew that attempted to circle the planet in a balloon.
Warrior One is an H1 Hummer that typically sold for $129,000 to $140,000, and the "Overhaulin" upgrades included a new engine, airbrushed images of soldiers and CNN correspondents, and a DVD player, four televisions and a new sound system, Fisher House reported.
