Battle of the real estate investment stars
Real estate author John Reed is the subject of an entertaining cover story in this week's East Bay Express, detailing his three-year legal battle with Russ Whitney, who presides over the publicly-traded, get-rich-quick-in-real-estate seminar and advice empire, Whitney Information Network Inc.
Reed, who writes a well-regarded, no-nonsense newsletter on real estate investing (and is the author of a stack of books on the subject), keeps tabs on 168 real estate "gurus" on his Web site.
After Whitney sued Reed for libel in 2002, Reed took a closer look at some of the claims Whitney has made about his success in real estate, publishing his findings and some other details he uncovered about Whitney's personal life. Many of those details were removed from Reed's Web site as part of a 2005 legal settlement, but are revisited in the Express article (the picture accompanying this post is a subtle hint at their nature).
Inman News clued readers in to Reed's guru ratings a decade ago, in this 1997 story, and covered his 2004 critique of Robert Kiyosaki's best-selling "Rich Dad, Poor Dad."
