Widgets add new layer to Sunday stroll
By Jessica Swesey, Wednesday, March 14, 2007.You may look out your front window one day and notice a couple standing in front of your house with their cell phones out. But they're not talking -- they're actually looking up your home's estimated value on Zillow. It's all thanks to a new mobile widget platform that launched today.
Two things in technology and the Web that are huge right now -- GPS and widgets -- are coming together in a new platform for mobile GPS widgets, called WHERE. The app makes it possible for consumers to add widgets to their mobile devices. What's more interesting is that the company, uLocate Communications, has opened a program for developers so that they can create and publish WHERE widgets. Zillow is among the first companies to use the widget platform, according to a release today. The mobile widget incorporating Zillow's API would make it possible for home shoppers to check a home's "zestimate" on their cell phone or mobile device while visiting the home or walking by.
