The latest monthly foreclosures report by RealtyTrac awards Stockton, Calif., top honors: highest foreclosure rate among U.S. metro areas in May, with one foreclosure filing for every 88 households. That's about 7.5 times the national average, according to the company's data.
Six of the top-10 metro areas with high foreclosure rates are in California, RealtyTrac reports, including all of the top three (which are within 70 miles of each other in California's Central Valley). Foreclosure activity was up 350 percent in California in May, and RealtyTrac reported the state had a rate of one foreclosure filing for every 308 households. (See Inman News.)
Here's a rundown on the metro areas with the highest rate of foreclosure filings:
- Stockton, Calif. (1 in 88 households)
- Merced, Calif. (1 in 100 households)
- Modesto, Calif. (1 in 118 households)
- Las Vegas
- Riverside-San Bernardino, Calif.
- Vallejo-Fairfield, Calif.
- Sacramento, Calif.
- Denver, Colo.
- Detroit, Mich.
- Miami, Fla.
