Recruiting the 'Yutes'
By Jessica Swesey, Tuesday, May 20, 2008.Bookmarking Sites
As if recruiting real estate agents in a downturn weren't hard enough -- Lori Cox asks in an Inman Groups discussion how one goes about recruiting younger, Gen Y agents.
I've affectionately called them "Yutes" here because I saw a rare opportunity to quote Joe Pesci from "My Cousin Vinny" in a real estate blog post, and because it starts with "Y" - get it?
This discussion will likely become an ongoing thread for brokers. The National Association of Realtors released its latest member survey last week, which showed the typical Realtor is 52 years old, a world apart from the coveted Gen Y consumer who is somewhere in his or her mid-20s.
Since much of Gen Y speaks in weird text and instant messaging speak (do you know what TTYL, BFF and FTW mean?), it will be pretty important that agents know what the heck they are talking about. The obvious connection and reach for brokerage longevity will be to bring on more Gen Y agents. But that's easier said than done.
If you have some insight into recruiting "Yutes" into brokerage offices, cruise on over to the thread in the community section here.

In the philippines most agents are 50+ years-old, and recruiting Gen Y or X is not really an option for them since most Gen Y and X are confined with the idea of working at BPO companies.

We are not having any trouble finding the younger Realtors. We look for the 20 something to around the 40 something Realtors. They seem to be the ones that work out the best in our system.

I agree, Mike is starting to wonder if I know what I am doing. We need Realtors that know what Myspace is, Facebook and online positioning is. In today's market we need Realtors that know the importance of online marketing, blogs and positioning themselves as experts.
I need Realtors with a background in Social Networking, Online Positioning and willing to follow a client from signing up to closing. Possible 90 days to 12 months
The hardest thing in Real Estate is to help someone from start to end. If you have the ability to follow 500+ clients at once please call me.
I know we receive 60-70% of all Dallas Fort Worth traffic. We need a staff of Realtors that can help.
Mike Pannell has made our sites rank in the top 5 lines in all search engines and we need good Realtors to come aboard.

As a "yute" myself, I think it's only a matter of time before the average age of real estate agents begin to plumett.
Being a real estate agent can be a fruitful career filled with many opportunities. The opportunity to meet and change the lives of people I meet is one of my biggest driving factors alone.
Besides that, I think that the increasing use of technology in the real estate industry will be a major factor in drawing a younger generation of real estate agent.
