(Don't) have to admit it's getting better

Down in Pinellas County, Fla., last month's transition to TEMPO 5 MLS system "was one of the smoothest I’ve experienced in more than 20 years."

So says the director of information services for the Pinellas Realtor Organization and Suncoast MLS in a press release issued by TEMPO 5 vendor MarketLinx (see Inman News story).

Many Inman News readers will recall San Diego-based broker-owner and Inman News columnist Kris Berg's take when Sandicor upgraded to Tempo 5 over the summer.

TEMPO 5, she complained, seemed to have been developed by "a rabid badger holding a doctorate in quantum physics and a grudge."

Now Pinellas Realtor Organization's chairman of the board reports (via MarketLinx) that TEMPO 5 business reports are "amazingly fast" and listing maintenance is "extremely efficient."

Pinellas County broker and Inman News member Anne Hensel begs to differ.

"Sorry, I am NOT impressed at all," with TEMPO 5, she comments. "It is Soooooooo slow and it takes twice as many clicks than it used to take to get a result."

Buyers are unhappy too, Hensel says.

"If I send them 5 listings, only one shows up and they have to click at the bottom somewhere on the right hand corner to get to the next listing," she reports.

Hensel says the only feature of TEMPO 5 she likes is the map search.

You know how the song goes:

"I've got to admit it's getting better, better

A little better all the time, it can't get no worse"

"It is Soooooooo slow and it takes twice as many clicks than it used to. . . "

I haven't used the system but I can relate. Fewer click is always better as there is always lag time for each click and that can be annoying. Sometimes I wonder if companies actually try the software they develop.

In Austin we recently moved our MLS system to Marketlinx. The transition was a huge mess. It seems the new software was not beta tested at all.

I didn't have much of a problem with the transition because there was an overlap in tools. You could use the Austin Tempo for a while while people were trying to switch. If you were an early adopted trying to the MLXchange, things were much more frustrating. :)

I am confused. Isn't Pinellas a member of the Mid Florida MLS? Sarasota just joined the Mid Florida. Now I can go sell a home 150 miles away from where I work . ;-)

During any MLS conversion all members experience some level of frustration. They are a huge undertaking.

People don't like change.

I'm not sure the point of singling out Marketlinx, twice, on this site.

With technology, as with anything, you are going to have problems. If you must judge, then judge on how quickly your vendor fixes these problems.

Who was it at Inman Connects last summer who said someone was going to come along and develop an open platform MLS software that is "plug and play?" I forget the commenter but he believed that company would clean house and by reading this it would seem that his premise is correct.

I have been a Tempo user in Austin for over a year and still don't like it. It is unbelievably non-intuitive. The learning curve is huge even for people who are pretty tech savvy. It seems as if First American, who developed it, put 12 engineers in a room and told them to come up with software that could give REALTORS evey possible thing they could ever ask for rather than put together a practical and easy to use system.
