This is not 'Missile Command'

TIP Strategies Inc., an economic development consulting firm, has mapped out U.S. job-loss trends using U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. You can press the "play" button to watch as green circles (representing job growth) shrink and then blossom into red circles (job loss) over time.
If this were a game of "Missile Command," you might expect "Game Over" to pop up at any moment. But how far from over is this grisly unemployment trend?

That's pretty cool. Well, not "cool" as in losing jobs is cool, but cool in a geeky, data visualization sort of way.
I'll freely admit I was transfixed on watching the Phoenix green circle swell to the size of the state of Arizona -- until New Orleans blew up at Katrina time. That was pretty amazing.
I loved Missile Command!

I missed the memo on 'Missile Comand', but I did watch that bubble mapping thingy several times. Very interesting: a steady increase of jobs leads to an abrupt decline.
Thanks for the link, that's a great visual.

Absolutely mesmerizing!
I couldn't help but feel an overpowering sense of "here it comes" as the marker crept to the mid-2007 mark.
Atlanta - two hours from my market, just pulsed along like the heartbeat of the whole map until last year. Felt like I was looking at the monitor bedside in the hospital.

Amazing, so much more impact when you see it on an actual map. And I thought it was bad here in Texas!

It's scary when you see that dot grow so big and the impact it has on so many families.
Cool Graphic though.

It's crazy how quickly those dots turned that angry red. Like, Brenda, I hope they turn green again soon.

Wow!! I thought my screen was going to explode. Let's just hope that all those that lost their jobs, find a new job and buy a house in the near future.

Sorry statistics, let’s hope it starts growing green this quarter...but what an awesome application!
Locally, we’ve been all jazzed about the City of Santa Monica’s new crime mapping system - http://www.santamonicapd.org/crimemapping - which is a really useful local application.

That was pretty cool. I love maps. I was confused by the Louisana flash in the middle until I remembered Katrina. Hopefully the country will return to normal by the end of the year or at least not be a sea of red.

That map is pretty impressive. Sadly, it looks like the US is under a heavy attack right now. It is definitely brutal out there right now.

Hope the worst has passed and green is in our near-term future... this would mean the Dallas Fort Worth area survived relatively unscathed.

Hi,
Just like all the big lending institutions tightening their lending guidelines, so have the PMI companies. Now, many times I am able to get a person approved for a loan through various mortgage companies but am unable to acquire them a PMI insurance policy that the lender requires to complete the loan. There are many PMI companies out there and they do differ from company to company, however it seems that the PMI companies have become the last word in lending. It matters not if the bank wants to do the loan, if you can’t obtain PMI.

The way it ballooned all red at the end really puts the job losses in perspective. Hopefully things will start growing green by the end of the year.
