Were you at REbarCamp Silicon Valley 2009?

My first official act as an Inman employee (other than the obligitory HR paperwork and such) was to attend part of REbarCamp Silicon Valley. I flew in from Atlanta just in time for the very beginnings of happy hour (nice timing, huh?). I didn't actually attend any sessions because the alure of the VIP lounge was just too strong for me to resist. I've been to a bunch of barcamps so I was way more interested in seeing people and catching up.
There's some other details about this barcamp that made it a bit unique like the very cool venue, but that's not really what I wanted to talk about here. The key take away for me from this barcamp was actually a deeper awareness of how much we all need and want community. The session titles matter - and they are helpful - but I think the real draw with bar camps is how much fun it is to connect with a couple hundred like-minded individuals and talk about some stuff.
This photo is from the "immediately-after" party (to be followed later by the after after party). Had some great conversations here.
Thanks so much to Julie Ziemelis and Hilda Ramirez for their hard work organizing #rebcsv!
What were your impressions of the day? Or the Party? or whatever...

This was my first BarCamp, so for me it wasn't an opportunity to finally meet people I knew only via their social media presence. Instead, for me it was a learning event, and what a learning event it was. When it comes to online marketing and social media marketing, I learned more in one day than I've learned in the past three or four years.
The thing that impressed me the most was that people from outside of Silicon Valley, some of them from out of state, flew great distances at their own expense to attend and share their knowledge and expertise without being paid to do so. Not one cent changed hands.
The moderators were people who have embraced social media as their marketing strategy and have succeeded. That they were willing to share without renumeration was what made it so special.
I hope someday to be able to pay it forward.

Matt,
It was great meeting you in person after seeing each other on SoMe sites for a while! You are so correct--Re BarCamps are needed for the community. Re BarCamps are a place where Realtors and affiliates share what they know--what works and what doesn't--in an environment that is casual, fun, and unique. I am a firm believer in this forum and look forward to seeing you at more!
