I currenlty work in the field Real Esate Web Design, and Real Estate SEO/SEM for a company called AgentExcel. I also was a Realtor in Maryland for many years, and still work in the industry in Real Estate development.
We really built our sites to be very Search Engine Friendly (AgentExcel)and to have multiple lead capture "widgets" with an easy to use console. Of course I believe they are the best Web site solution out there for agents. However Real Estate Web Masters also offers a very good product as does Realty Tech. There are several sites that provide great reviews such as webaward. You have to first decide what do you want your site to do for you? Establish your Brand, bring in leads, to be used as a sales and listing tool. The other factor is once you have your website up how are people going to find it, are you going to do Pay Per Click advertising, hire an SEO consultant..etc...
With a lot of focus turning to Viral Marketing, and the speed of the internet, along with smart phones etc... Video wil be playing a bigger and bigger part, why look at a photo, when you can visual tour the entire house on your cell phone right after you drive by it. I agree with the author that agents really should also be developing their brand, themselves as a product, not just promote their listings, but promote themselves and their knowledge and the listings and sales will follow.
