I was in charge of off-campus housing services at UC Berkeley for over 2 decades. I now split my time between my home near Lake Tahoe, CA and the SF Bay Area. I have kept up my interest in real estate and rental housing and have started construction of a website to help newcomers who are visiting or relocating to Berkeley. I also have started to freelance in research, analysis and writing on a variety of topics. In addition, I have a background in marketing and public relations.

  • CraigsList does nothing to

    CraigsList does nothing to check the veracity of its housing listings, whether for-sale or for-rent. I managed the off-campus housing services at UC Berkeley for 22 years and watched CraigsList destroy all the little mom-and-pop local rental listing businesses because CraigsList is free. Since no one needs to 'mind the store' at CraigsList, there was no one to monitor the crooks who listed fake rentals and took deposits from folks like visiting scholars who come from far-away places. Now some of these bad people have sophisticated websites for 'credit checks' and have been stealing identities across the USA from unsuspecting victims who think they are applying for housing. Sad.

    OK, I have just learned a lot about sidewiki versus searchwiki. What Teresa describes in #4 above is SEARCHwiki, which is an incredibly powerful tool for arranging your google searches. SIDEwiki is another matter altogether, and is quite controversial. I won't go into it here, but do a Google search on 'Sidewiki controversy' and you will see what I mean.
