Nice Post Gahlord, I have been using "Joomla" now for a little over a year and I "freaking love" the flexibility it affords us. The two biggest benefits are; 1. No more waiting for our web guy to make changes. 2. We can deploy sites quickly. As far as closed source goes, we were able to build an IDX component for less than the cost of a regular custom website. We now use this component on all of our sites. There are TONS of modules and components (free), the community is established and helpful and the setup is easy. There is a bit of a curve on the front end getting the hosting account setup but once that's done, there are scripts and programs the allow you to quickly setup and deploy sites. Backup of your sites is even downright easy! I keep waiting for the ah ha moment that says, "You shouldn't have gone open source" but over 1 year into it and I wouldn't go back!
Teresa, I agree that in its current state the device is not yet a "game changer". Having said that, I've had mine for about a week now and I can’t imagine not having it. The best description I've seen of this device is in an article by Andy Ihnatko at macworld.com " The iPad is certainly the single most software-focused computer on the market. Apple emphatically makes this point with every step of the iPad’s design: it’s a picture frame for software. And like a real picture frame, if you take notice of the frame instead of the software then something’s definitely gone wrong somewhere. Either you’ve got a gaudy picture frame or you’ve got deathly dull kids who will probably make their living designing tax forms or standing outside telling people where they can’t park their cars." I think as the developers catch up, the iPad will in fact become a game changer. Joe Boylan P.S. Took it to Santa Fe for a weekend away.
