Concentrating all national sales data in one database and selling it (in the form of auto valuations) appears to be a giant step towards putting individual real estate agents out of business. Until a few months ago I still held the old-fashioned notion that a local Board of REALTORS® existed to serve its REALTOR® members. Then I realized my own association had redefined its mission. It has decided to do its best to brand itself with the public. It wants to become the trusted source of information and advice for home buyers and home sellers. Funny thing is ... I thought that was my job. Sean, I think your comments are right on the mark. The growing acceptance of Auto Valuation as a substitute for the reasoned judgment of neighborhood REALTORS® is baffling to me. The NAR is endorsing Auto Valuation by setting up this database. It is a fascinating thing to watch an entire industry take action at the highest levels to put itself out of business. It makes me sad, because I am involved in that industry. I wonder whether I will still have a job when this thing plays itself out. But it's fascinating nonetheless.
