Kris, Very clever and well presented article. I thoroughly enjoy your writing style. I agree with you on compensation, but just to maintain objectivity I have decided to take the ACRE (Accredited Consultant in Real Estate) course to examine the paid-by-the-hour school of thought. Haven't had time to get started with it as yet, but I will! Just as soon as I show a few more houses, stand-by for a few more inspections, attend a few more classes, coat drives, blog posts, tweets, you know the drill. I look forward to your next article. Paul, Excellent comment on attic ventilation. An additional point on topic which many folks are not aware of: In California grassland areas (and perhaps other states as well) the building code actually forbids soffit ventilation and requires instead "eyebrow"-type vents low on the roof. The reason for this is the fact in the event of a fire approaching the wall of a structure, the flame would be more easily drawn up through the soffit vent (warm air rising) and ignite the attic and roof from the inside the structure. The eyebrows can be retrofitted to most roofing types on existing roofs, and certainly are a consideration for new roofs and replacements regardless of whether you reside in a grassland.
