Saul Hansell

Technology Reporter, The New York Times & Founding Editor of Bits Blog

Saul Hansell is a technology reporter for the New York Times covering telecommunications, including companies involved in wired and wireless telephone service, cable television, Internet video, cellphone handsets, and other devices connected to networks. He also covers communications policy and privacy.

He joined the New York Times in 1992 to cover banking and finance. In 1997, he became the first reporter at the Times to focus on electronic commerce, covering the rise, fall and rebirth of the Internet industry, as well as medium's effect on media and business. In 2007, he was the founding editor of Bits, the New York Times technology blog, for which he covered a wide range of technology topics.

From 1984 to 1992, he worked at Institutional Investor, covering finance for its magazine and newsletters.

Raised in Detroit, he received a B. A. in Urban Studies/Economics from Columbia College in 1984. He lives in Montclair, N.J., with his wife, Lynne Eisenbrand, and two daughters.
