California MLSs reveal sharing details

Real estate brief

Inman News®

Members of four Northern California multiple listing services will gain direct access to all of the MLSs beginning on Dec. 15, according to a Tuesday announcement, and members of three additional MLSs will join and further expand this data-sharing agreement in first-quarter 2009. MLS officials had announced the plan in September -- the December launch for the first group of MLSs is ahead of the original schedule.

Under the plan, users will sign on to their primary MLS system in order to gain access to all of the other systems. The San Francisco Association of Realtors MLS, Bay Area Real Estate Information Services Inc., MetroList Services Inc. and MLSListings Inc. will be the first to join. The second group, which will join during the first quarter, include the Bay East Association of Realtors MLS, Contra Costa Association of Realtors MLS and East Bay Regional Data Inc.

Providing increased access to property data is always good for REALTORS. If it doesn't already it should include easier access to information on public record (like tax assessments). This cooperative effort should also economize the overhead of data management.

I'll be watching to see how California REALTORS feel about this.
