Good advice for beginning bloggers
Inman Community brief
By Inman News, Thursday, October 9, 2008.Editor's note: The following is a reader comment about the Oct. 1 Inman News column, "Write what you know."
"... One of the first things that I was told as a beginning blogger was to find your own voice. Part of having you own voice is writing about subjects that you know or that you feel strongly about. Finding your own voice does not mean that we should all find the same voice.
"Readers will read the blogs that speak about subjects that interest them, and everyone is not interested in the same thing." --Pam Dent

Sound advice. I have learned also to explain my thoughts in as detailed a way as possible as fleeting thoughts, quickly jotted down, are often misunderstood or misconstrued. Connecting with the reader who identifies with your point of view or can add depth to your discussion is a wonderful reward as well.

I agree, sound advice. It should go without saying that using "feeds" to create a blog doesn't fall into the category of developing your own "voice." And having a blog does not automatically make one a skilled writer. Some basics are required or else the voice is garbled.
I'd add that some thought should be given to the purpose of the blog... and that purpose should, obviously, relate to the intended listener's interests and needs. One of the more frequent crticisms I hear of blogs is that they are "confusing" -- particularly when discussions/comments become prolific. So I'd suggest giving some thought to this question:
Do you want your blog to primarily generate discussion or put forth your own thoughts?
