Policing title industry has gone 'too far'
By Inman News, Wednesday, August 29, 2007.Re: 'Stewart Title faces $1.95 million fine in Washington state' (Aug. 28)
Dear Editor:
Well, as a matter of course, title companies (or whoever) should be able to give to a charity (auction or not) no matter who is sponsoring the event without being chastised because it is a real estate function.
They should also be able to put on training sessions to the real estate industry (or anyone else) as part of their marketing efforts in the industry. Every business should be allowed to market itself to its generators (it is just a basic part of doing business and keeping it viable).
I agree with the commission taking exception to desk fees, picking up agents marketing costs, etc. But not to be able to give to a charity or market oneself with training seminars is going too far.
I personally think the commission goes way beyond where it needs to go in policing the title industry. I personally do not solicit any favors from any title company. I am just put off by the scope of the commission's authority or, I should say, how it uses it; it is not reasonable.
