'Economic survival of the fittest'
Letter to the Editor
By Inman News, Monday, February 9, 2009.Re: 'End of the independent contractor' (Feb. 6)
Dear Editor:
I hope real estate agents never stop being independent contractors whose survival is based strictly on commissions obtained through actual results. Being an agent is free enterprise in one of its purest forms: economic survival of the fittest. It is one of the few professions in which the workers pay their own expenses and pay for the privilege of working.
I have found that the most successful agents usually have an iron-clad work ethic, a trait that seems to be growing rarer by the minute.
Imagine what the world would be like if every worker -- including teachers, government employees and the president of the United States -- had to pay expenses associated with their jobs and would be compensated ONLY if there is a positive and measurable result.
While making workers pay their own way and rely solely on commissions for survival would be impractical for many professions and throw the world into chaos, just imagine what levels of success our country could achieve if employees simply worked as though they were paid on commissions by giving 110 percent and concentrating on results.

A salary is a guarantee of sorts. Guarantees cost money.
If the lesson of History is to be examined, companies that offer a salary do not give the best service and do not last, because the best agents will not work for less.
The debate over the best compensation has already been settled by the market itself. People don't care how the agent is paid as much as they want their house sold. If the slow market thins the herd of agents, so be it.
This is a hard business, and that brings out the best in people. I want to be the best, and my clients want the best.
