New homes a bust for Mass. boomers
Letter to the Editor
By Inman News, Thursday, October 22, 2009.Re: 'The builder-boomer disconnect' (Oct. 22)
Dear Editor:
I agree there is a disconnect between builders and boomers -- and especially in Massachusetts where there is so little buildable land left.
It seems no one is building one-level homes and the only two-story homes with 1,900 to 2,400 square feet are age-restricted, adult-only condominium developments that all look alike and have high condo fees and taxes. Many people still prefer to live in neighborhoods with people of all ages.
It's hard to find new single-family developments built to accommodate two-person households, so people either stay in their homes or they move south, where homes are more affordable and have better designs.

Now I know why so many Mass license plates are seen at the beach and those people are buying. More house for less money and our taxes are lower, much lower. One couple from the Boston area said their annual RE taxes are less than they paid for 2 months up in the cold.

In Hemet, CA, there is an awesome development of two story homes, but every home has an elevator. Unfortunately, the builder went BK and complex litigation has ensued, but eventually it will be complete and others will be able to move in to it.
