Real estate self-regulation won't work

Dear Editor:

Re: 'Real Estate reform must come from within the industry' (April 14)

Reforming the industry? How about the fact that self-regulating won't happen. There are a myriad of reasons why. First and foremost is human nature's tendency to look the other way. It's not because we condone illegal activity or ethical violations -- we loathe these and the perpetrators.

But at the end of the day we are simply to busy taking care of our clients, our business and families.

Plus, there is no personal gain ... we are wired for commissions: no commission, no action. Who has the time to devote to it? For what gain?

We want to believe their disgraceful deeds will do them in. But in most cases (I'm familiar with) the only thing they receive may be an occasional wrist slap. I know of an agent who I believe is so blatantly dishonest it makes me sick to see her signs. Any agent who has worked with her has a story. She should have lost her license years ago.

For many, just like in this example, it's all about the money and market penetration. Some just don't care. Just be careful what dogs you lie down with ... you may just end up with fleas.

This coming from someone who works for a company that is notoriously known for charging home inspectors to be on their "preferred list of home inspectors" that gets handed out to their clients.

I agree however, self regulation will not work. It will take legislation, and it needs to happen yesterday!
