Future of MLS: Full speed ahead
Consolidation and data-sharing efforts spread
Change or die. Sink or swim. That's the mood of many conversations taking place around the future role of the multiple listing service in real estate.
Long a crucial center of a healthy, functioning housing market, the MLS now finds itself having to adjust and reinvent to keep up with changing times.
Part of this change has already started in the form of data-sharing among MLSs that are located in overlapping or bordering markets. Some MLSs are also moving toward consolidation plans.
Brokers and MLS affiliates are engaging in conversations and re-evaluating the role of MLS, asking questions like: Why does the market need an MLS? How can MLSs do a better job at keeping up with brokers' fast-changing technology needs?
This three-part special report on the future of the MLS examines issues including consolidation and data-sharing initiatives, the renewed interest in public-facing property search sites maintained by MLSs, and a new debate forming over the MLS' role in broker cooperation and the offer of compensation.
- Part 1: "Consolidation, collaboration breaking down MLS walls"
- Part 2: "MLS public listing sites gain support"
- Part 3: "Debate forms over MLS role in offer of compensation"
