In a new twist on an old scam, a Realtor says a scammer who reposted her listing as a bogus rental on Craigslist actually took prospective victims on tours around the outside of the property, but couldn’t let them in the house since they didn’t have the keys.
Tyler, Texas-based Realtor Carolyn Maas said the scammer told targets that the for-sale sign in the front yard belonged to an agent that they were tired of working with.
Authorities say it’s more common for scammers to say they’re unavailable to show the home because they are out of the country — doing military service or missionary work, for example. The Houston Association of Realtors issued a warning about a Craigslist rental scam in the spring. Other portals that carry rentals, including Zillow, have also been targeted by scammers.
