Though it’s been five years since the government bailed out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the future of the government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) is still very much uncertain, The Street reported.

Releasing them from government ownership may seem a political nonstarter, but record earnings recently posted by the GSEs have helped create considerable opposition to their potential dismantlement.
