New York is the best city for public transit, followed respectively by San Francisco and Boston, according to rankings published by neighborhood information site Walk Score.
The other cities in the top 10 were (listed in order of ranking): Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Chicago, Seattle, Baltimore, Los Angeles and Portland, Ore.
The rankings are based on Walk Score’s “Transit Scores,” which appear on thousands of real estate sites.
Research shows that access to public transit bolsters property values. A study commissioned by the National Association of Realtors and the American Public Transportation Association in March 2013 found that values in areas with access to “fixed-guideway” public transit service performed 42 percent better than homes further from public transit in the same regions from 2006 to 2011.
Fixed-guideway transit includes commuter rail, heavy rail, light rail, bus rapid transit, and ferry service.
