Real estate brokers and agents in New York City, who appropriated titles like “senior vice president” and “vice chairman,” may no longer embellish their real estate job titles without facing a $1,000 fine.
The New York Department of State has reiterated a 50-year-old law about the titles, which are deemed misleading because brokers and agents are not actually employees of the firms they’re affiliated with, but independent contractors.
Some are trying to come up with other, legal, embossed titles, which help give cache with the jet-setting, internationally minded crowd that make up the New York City real estate clientele, from the royal “Real Estate Queen” to the mundane “senior global real estate adviser.”
