Job Description

The real estate community around the world turns to Inman first for accurate, innovative and timely coverage of the most important news and information. Known for its award-winning journalism, cutting-edge technology coverage and forward-thinking events, Inman is the industry’s leading resource for professionals.

We’re looking for a hardworking, ambitious, and quick-witted reporter with an interest in the real estate business to join our national editorial team, writing daily articles and longer-term features. This is a remote work position and can be done from anywhere in the U.S., and offers competitive salary and benefits.

This position will specifically be focused on covering the most exciting and important news in the real estate industry—including everything from industry gossip and feuds, new trends and oddities, the intersection of real estate and larger issues like climate change and gentrification, to legal and policy subjects like the National Association of Realtors’ legislative priorities and lawsuits. This beat encompasses developments that affect real estate pros and the wider public.

We don’t want someone to cover real estate uncritically—the ideal candidate recognizes both the potential of new shifts and their possible pitfalls, is enthusiastic about explaining difficult topics in a concise and cohesive manner, and is also willing to ask trenchant questions about who is helped or hurt by changes in the real estate industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Report and write 7-12 original stories weekly on new developments affecting the real estate legislative and regulatory world, including a mix of breaking news, voicey blogging, and in-depth, investigative articles
  • Cultivate reliable sources in the real estate, regulatory, and legislative industries that can provide exclusive reporting opportunities and unique perspectives
  • Collaborate with other members of the editorial team (reporters, editors, and designers) on comprehensive reports and features
  • Occasionally appear on other media outlets (radio, TV) to speak about real estate issues

Key Skills & Knowledge

  • 2+ years experience as a reporter in real estate, regulation and legislation, or general news
  • A sample of published clips of varying lengths and reporting styles, including material evidencing wit and attitude
  • Willingness and enthusiasm to pick up the phone and ask people tough questions; to interview sources in person; cover live events; and generally go offline and report out in the real world
  • Digital savvy, including extensive experience using web publishing platforms and content management systems, social media, multimedia software, and smartphone apps
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Timeliness—can finish projects on deadline and be prompt for meetings and phone calls
  • Strong organizational and personal time-management skills, self-starting
  • Critical thinking, inquisitive, and dogged—willing to reach out to multiple sources multiple times for comment, even in adversarial situations
  • Superb networking, teamwork, negotiation and interpersonal skills
  • Cool under pressure

Inman is an equal opportunity employer committed to building an inclusive workplace environment. This is a full-time, remote position.
