Entries sought for Good Neighbor awards

Realtor Magazine, a publication of the National Association of Realtors, is seeking nominations for its fifth annual Good Neighbor Awards. The program recognizes Realtors whose commitment to community service has helped make their community a better place to live.

Five winners will be announced in November and recognized at the 2004 Realtors Conference & Expo in Orlando, Fla., in that month. The winners will receive travel expenses to the convention, media exposure and a $7,500 grant. Five honorable mentions will each receive a $1,500 grant.

Last year’s contest drew a record of nearly 300 entries, according to NAR.

NAR President Walt McDonald said the awards gives NAR the opportunity to honor Realtors who give of themselves to improve the quality of life in their communities.

“Realtors understand what their community is all about, and they jump right in to fill a need. The Good Neighbor Awards is a way to recognize outstanding members who often work behind the scenes to make their community a better place to live and to build bridges of community understanding,” he said in a statement.

Entries must be received by Friday, May 28, 2004.

Award sponsors include eNeighborhoods of Boca Raton, Fla., Fannie Mae and Pulte Homes of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Last year’s winners were James Austin Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas, who created the Renaissance Cultural Center and the National Cowboys of Color Museum, Jim Bess Sr. of Apple Valley, Calif., who founded Victor Valley Toys for Tots, Claudia Deprez of West Palm Beach, Fla., who founded Northend Coalition of Neighborhoods, James Pacheco of Castro Valley, Calif., who started a chapter of Christmas in April, and Bobbie Tugwell of Baton Rouge, La., who supported Hospice of Baton Rouge.
