FSBO listings heat up Miami

Homeowners in Miami, Fla., topped the list for those who chose to sell their homes without using a real-estate broker during the last year, according to a survey of home-selling habits released today by ForSaleByOwner.com.

Of the more than 26,000 homes listed with ForSaleByOwner.com in the last year, 3.3 percent came from Miami alone, the company reported. In a virtual dead heat with Miami, Detroit placed second with 3.2 percent of “independent” home sellers.

“Miamians are on the cutting edge of many trends, and now they’ve embraced the idea of buying and selling real estate without interference from a broker,” Sambrotto said.

Atlanta (3.1 percent), Houston (2.2 percent), and Dallas (1.6 percent) rounded out the top five. Data was based on geographical information for listings posted on ForSaleByOwner.com since January 2004. Last year, the top cities for independent home sellers included Houston; Charlotte, N.C.; Indianapolis; Raleigh, N.C.; and Virginia Beach, Va.

New York City, at #8, was a surprise newcomer to the top-10 list, along with Chicago (#7) and Cleveland (#10), according to ForSaleByOwner.com COO Colby Sambrotto. “Our results from major urban areas like New York and Chicago indicate that people are getting more savvy about saving money on these transactions as their property values keep soaring,” Sambrotto said.

ForSaleByOwner.com is an online marketplace where owners can advertise their homes and cars for sale.
