Real estate lawyer stole escrow funds

A real estate attorney in White Plains, N.Y., pleaded guilty on Wednesday to stealing more than $300,000 in escrow funds from clients, according to a report from the Westchester County District Attorney’s office.

Richard Hugh Abelson, 69, served as the attorney for a White Plains’ couple’s home refinance. Instead of using the couple’s escrow funds to satisfy the original mortgage on the house, he spent the money for his personal use over several months.

Abelson is a sole practitioner whose office is located at 30 Glenn St. in White Plains. He was convicted of grand larceny and could serve up to 15 years in state prison. His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 1.
