Realtor groups support new-home construction in Gulf Coast

Realtor associations across the country and internationally are sponsoring the construction of 54 homes in New Orleans in partnership with a local Habitat for Humanity group.

Half of the homes will be constructed in another location and shipped to the Gulf Coast area, while half will be built on site in Gulf Coast neighborhoods. The homes will be under construction through 2007, the National Association of Realtors said in an announcement this month.

The first home built in New Orleans through this Realtor effort is located at 2131 Mazant St. in the Musicians’ Village.

“We hope this home makes a real difference to a New Orleans family and offers a fresh start after having lost so much in the storm,” said Thomas M. Stevens, NAR president and senior vice president of NRT Inc., in a statement.

The home on Mazant Street will be dedicated in November during an annual NAR conference and trade show. An estimated 30,000 Realtors “will bring hands-on help to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast by cleaning up damaged neighborhoods, building new Habitat for Humanity homes, clearing and planting in City Park and bringing $34 million in needed revenue,” the group announced.

The New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity group is an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. The local group seeks to build 1,500 homes in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes within the next five years.
