A woman who was accused of participating in a multi-million dollar mortgage fraud scheme in at least five southern states was sentenced Wednesday to five years and 10 months in federal prison, and ordered to pay restitution of $1.2 million.
Rebecca Marie Hauck, 34, was convicted on charges of mortgage fraud conspiracy and bank fraud following a 42-count indictment in September 2005.
Prosecutors said Hauck and an alleged accomplice, Matthew Bevan Cox, stole the identities of property owners they rented from, erasing the mortgage liens on their homes, and obtaining multiple loans on properties in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. The couple have been dubbed “The Bonnie and Clyde of Mortgage Fraud” by the news media.
Cox, 37, has been a fugitive since December 2003. His known aliases include Maxwell Price, David Richard Freeman, Gerald Scott Cugno, Michael Shawn Shanahan, Gary Lee Sullivan, Michael John Eckert, Michael White, Kevin White, David White, and James Redd. The Florida native is 5 foot, 6 inches tall, weighs 182 pounds, and has brown hair and green eyes. He is known to carry a firearm at all times.
