Big jump in overnight real estate rates

Long-term mortgage interest rates shot higher Friday, and the benchmark 10-year Treasury bond yield sank to 5.11 percent.

The 30-year fixed-rate average jumped to 6.29 percent, and the 15-year fixed rate rose to 5.99 percent. The 1-year adjustable stayed at 5.57 percent.

The 30-year Treasury bond yield was down to 5.21 percent.

Mortgage rate figures are according to Bankrate.com, which publishes nightly averages based on its survey of 4,000 banks in 50 states. Points on these mortgages range from zero to 3.5.

In other economic news, the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 157.66 points, or 1.19 percent, finishing at 13,424.39. The Nasdaq was up 32.16 points, or 1.27 percent, closing at 2,573.54.
