Overnight real estate rate gains hit 9th day

Long-term mortgage interest rates continued higher Tuesday, and the benchmark 10-year Treasury bond yield climbed to 5.3 percent.

The 30-year fixed-rate average gained to 6.36 percent, and the 15-year fixed rate rose to 6.04 percent. The 1-year adjustable was up to 5.57 percent.

The 30-year Treasury bond yield jumped to 5.41 percent.

Mortgage rate figures are according to Bankrate.com, which publishes nightly averages based on its survey of 4,000 banks in 50 states. Points on these mortgages range from zero to 3.5.

In other economic news, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 129.95 points, or 0.97 percent, finishing at 13,295.01. The Nasdaq was down 22.38 points, or 0.87 percent, closing at 2,549.77.
