Short-sale expert recommends specialization

Eli Tene, president of I Short Sale Inc., has negotiated thousands of short-sale transactions since 1991. He specializes in foreclosures, residential and commercial real estate, debt and equity financing, loss mitigation and equity-based joint ventures.

He will speak during a panel, "How to Help Homeowners While Closing Business," during a Foreclosures Workshop presentation tomorrow at the Real Estate Connect conference in San Francisco. The conference ends Friday.

Tene answered a set of questions posed by Inman News:

What do you see happening in the real estate market in 2008?

Defaults and foreclosures have and will continue to saturate the market, having a long-term impact for years to come.

What advice do you have to help real estate agents and brokers get through this market?

Agents and brokers need to continue to learn about the default side (short sales and REOs), and specialize in different marketing avenues for these properties.

What was your first job?

I was a leasing agent for a commercial property company.

What made you join your current company?

As a broker, I continuously juggled multiple vendors and never was truly in control. I wanted to concentrate on vertical integration and excel in all service fronts.

What’s been your biggest challenge in running the business?

Managing people and providing the resources they need to grow continues to present the biggest challenge.

If you had one thing to do over again in your life, what would it be?

I am extremely happy in life and couldn’t imagine changing a thing.

What style of home do you live in and when did you buy it?

I purchased a Santa Fe-style house about five years ago.

What worries keep you awake at night?

None.

What lesson did you learn in the last year?

I learned the importance of getting all team members (at every level of an organization) on the same page. Information sharing is of paramount importance.

What would your second career choice be?

I would love to be involved in charity and actually have started with the creation of the Israeli Leadership Club (ILC).

What kind of music do you listen to?

I like to listen to modern opera.

Who is your hero?

If had to choose I would choose Warren Buffet.

Hear Tene speak at Real Estate Connect in San Francisco, July 23-25, 2008. The conference program and registration are available online via the Connect Web site .
