Forging ahead

Kris Berg, broker-owner of San Diego Castles Realty in San Diego, Calif., and a weekly Inman News columnist, talks about how technology is changing the real estate business in a video excerpt from her Vook, or multimedia book, titled, "Keeping it Real (estate): A Guide to Life, Happiness and the Pursuit of Property."

"The Internet’s given us a lot of efficiencies, which our customers totally dig. But the downside for us is we get out of our cave oh so rarely," Berg laments.

She’s traded in her desktop computer for a laptop to increase her mobility, and can access contracts wherever she happens to be. But the ability to accomplish more and more tasks online means less face time with clients.

"Yes, real estate is still a people business, but our people are on the other side of that black box now. They don’t want me at their kitchen table all evening, every evening, any more than I want to be there."

Inman News Publisher Brad Inman is also founder of Vook LLC.

The full version of "Keeping it Real (estate)," which includes a collection of Berg’s writing and a series of videos, is available at a special rate of 99 cents for iPhone, iPad or personal computer.
