Win awards for your real estate writing

Real estate authors, journalists and bloggers: the National Association of Real Estate Editors and Society of American Business Editors and Writers are hosting annual competitions to recognize the best real estate writing in numerous categories.

NAREE’s Robert Bruss Real Estate Book Awards Competition, which has a Feb. 15, 2011, entry deadline, honors four real estate authors each year and is named for Inman News syndicated columnist and author Robert "Bob" Bruss, who died in 2007. (Entry form here.)

Authors of real estate-related books published in 2010 are eligible to enter the fourth annual competition. Winners will be announced during NAREE’s 45th annual spring conference, to be held in San Antonio, Texas.

Entrants must submit three copies of their book and a 5,000-word excerpt. One award will honor a first-time real estate author, and the content matter can range from real estate finance to sustainable design. The entry fee is $125 for nonmembers and $100 for members.

NAREE, a nonprofit association founded in 1929, also offers an annual journalism competition and journalism fellowships. The 61st annual real estate journalism awards, which has a March 1, 2011, entry deadline, features categories ranging from "Best blog" to "Best Investigative Report."

The first entry is free for NAREE members, the second entry is $15, and each entry after the second is $25. For nonmembers: The first entry is $75, the second entry is $15 and subsequent entries cost $25 apiece.

NAREE offers travel and career development stipends to journalists through its Bivens Fellowship program. The application deadline is April 15, 2011, for those stipends. There is no fee for members to apply, and a $75 fee for nonmembers.

The Society of American Business Editors and Writers’ 16th annual Best in Business contest this year features a real estate category. The entry period runs from Jan. 4, 2011, to Jan. 31, 2011.

Individual entry fees are $50 prior to Jan. 15 and $55 for those received after Jan. 15, and general excellence entry fees are $115 if received before Jan. 15 and $125 after Jan. 15.
