Designers, architects, home stagers mining listing photos for inspiration

Real estate brokerage Redfin has debuted "Featured Collections," a medley of featured photo collections created by well-known industry professionals to raise the visibility of its Pinterest-like social media platform, "Redfin Collections."

The introduction of Featured Collections comes two months after Seattle-based Redfin rolled out Redfin Collections. The website allows users to create and display listing images in a manner similar to social media website Pinterest. Since Redfin Collection’s introduction, the brokerage reports that users have created 3,500 collections containing a total of 32,000 listing photos.

Featured Collections are curated by real estate professionals including respected designers and architects, home stagers, photographers and media figures. Redfin believes the collections, which now appear prominently on the platform’s home page, will spur more activity on the website.

"Since the launch of Redfin Collections in December, we’ve been inspired by the different ways people are using it," said Bridget Frey, vice president of engineering at Redfin. "Creating Featured Collections is a way for Redfin to highlight those that are especially creative, useful or unusual.

Redfin Collections closely resembles Pinterest, allowing users to create collections of photos scraped from the 25 multiple listing services (MLSs) that Redfin is a member of. But, in contrast to Pinterest, Collections is designed to respect and promote the interests of real estate agents. Every listing image offers attribution to the listing’s broker and agent, notes the source MLS, and follows other MLS rules.

Redfin CEO Glenn Kelman dubbed it "a responsible way to participate in social media" when the service launched.
