A real estate agent’s life can be exciting, frustrating, puzzling, baffling, disappointing and rewarding — sometimes simultaneously. Happily, agents aren’t alone, nor are they unique.

Agents’ problems are common problems — certainly among those striving for success.

Fortunately, many words of wisdom imparted by our Founding Fathers and today’s most inspiring speakers motivate us, guide us and encourage us through our career. Here are a few favorites suited to any agent’s professional life.

Hopkins’ pithy advice is a variation on a common theme regarding your attitude’s role in your success (or failure). Among the most famous is this one: “If you’re going fishing for Moby Dick, take the tartar sauce,” which is itself a slight variation on a Zig Ziglar riff on optimism.

This simple motto urges anyone striving to reach a goal to aim big and behave as though success is certain. If you expect to succeed, you will take the listing agreement to the presentation, buy champagne before the close, get your post-sale promotions set up ahead of closing and so on.

“Take the tartar sauce” runs counter to the more commonly heard advice to “Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.” Doing that only prepares you to lose. Taking the tartar sauce tells your inner doubter — and we all have one — that you intend to succeed!
