An elegant Maryland estate that just hit the market for $6.2 million has a rich history — for years, the best-selling author Tom Clancy — creator of the hit Jack Ryan book series and many, many other spy thrillers — called it home.

With acres of woods and waterfront views of the Chesapeake Bay, the 537-acre property is located at 5000 Camp Kaufmann Road in Huntingtown, Maryland — 45 miles south of Washington, D.C. The house itself is designed in the contemporary stone mansion style. At 17,000 square feet and seven bedrooms, it’s equipped with an indoor pool, a retractable roof and a two-lane gun range.

Clancy, who earned commercial success through spy thrillers such as Red Storm Rising and The Hunt for Red October, had been living in the house for decades before his death in 2013. His second wife and widow, Alexandra Clancy, is the one selling the house through Cummings & Co. Realtors agent Angel Stevens.

The grandeur of the estate hits the visitor right away — a three-story stone mansion is nestled among endless green fields, extensive woods and clear blue water.

“It’s spectacular,” Stevens told a local outlet. Indeed, the property has 11 separate lots that could potentially be divided into slots for separate homes.

But for now, whoever buys the entire estate will be getting a slab of both literary and American history — before Clancy purchased the property, the land served as a summer camp for Jewish children from Washington.
