ORLANDO — MLS President John Mosey just received a new pair of suspenders — and an award for his contributions to the multiple listing service industry.
Mosey heads up NorthstarMLS, an MLS with more than 13,500 members in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
He is the second recipient of the Peter Shuttleworth MLS Executive Award of Excellence, which was awarded to MRIS CEO David Charron last year.
Shuttleworth, now retired after 27 years as executive vice president of Wisconsin-based Metro MLS, is known as a leader in MLS cooperation. He is also known for wearing suspenders.
The Council of MLSs (CMLS) created the Shuttleworth award to recognize MLS executives that go above and beyond and help carry MLSs into the future, CMLS Secretary-Treasurer Chris Carrillo said in introducing the award at the “MLS Executives Session” of the National Association of Realtors annual conference today (Friday).

Mosey has been in the real estate industry for more than 40 years, as both a vendor and an MLS executive.
He is a founding board member of real estate intellectual property protection group REDPLAN; vice chair of the Broker Public Portal (BPP); and provides guidance to broker data management platform Upstream as part of NorthstarMLS’s participation in Upstream’s beta testing.
His was also one of two MLSs (MRIS was the other) that took on tech company NeighborCity in 2012 for alleged copyright infringement of MLS data. The litigation lasted more than two years and cost a bundle, but ultimately caused NeighborCity to change its business model.
Mosey was chosen for the Shuttleworth award because he exemplifies everything the best MLS executives strive to achieve, CMLS said in a press release.

“There are many executives in the MLS industry who demonstrate excellence within their organizations on a daily basis, and then there are executives who also have the courage to stand up and fulfill underserved needs within the real estate industry to protect the efficient marketplace for MLS members, brokers, agents, and homeowners,” said Denee Evans, CEO of CMLS, in a statement.
“John Mosey is such an executive, a pillar of strength within the MLS community whose wisdom and vision for real estate has made a profound and lasting impact on the MLS industry and beyond.”
The announcement was met with cheers and applause from the hundreds of MLS executives and others in the audience.
“He’s literally done everything in the industry,” Carrillo — who is also CEO of Metro MLS in Milwaukee — later told Inman.
“He’s the perfect winner for this year’s award.”
Carrillo admitted that he’s “got a bit of a man crush” on Mosey, noting he and Mosey are MLS neighbors in Wisconsin.
“He’s one of those rare guys, along with David Charron, that lights up a room if he walks into it,” Carrillo said.
“Everybody loves John.”
Mosey was unable to attend the event due to a health problem. NorthstarMLS Chairman John Anderson received the award on his behalf and said Mosey’s family had said “he’s making very good progress.”
